Public holidays and statutory leave: tips for maximizing your vacations
An employee in Luxembourg is entitled to 26 days paid vacation per year. In 2025 and 2026, you'll be able to take advantage of several long weekends by strategically taking a few days off.
It's also worth noting that in Luxembourg, public holidays that fall on a Sunday exceptionally give employees a compensatory day off. For example, in 2024, May 9, Europe Day, was also Ascension Day. As compensation, employees had the option of taking an additional day off within the following 3 months. Unfortunately, 2025 and 2026 offer no such compensation.
On the other hand, if you plan your vacations wisely and don't work on Saturdays or Sundays, you'll still be able to take advantage of a few extra days to treat yourself to one or two long weekends. We've put together some tips below.

Working vacations and public holidays in 2025 and 2026
Luxembourg is a country that knows how to keep its traditions alive, and public holidays often stem from the country's Catholic religious tradition.
- Friday August 15, 2025: Assumption
- Saturday, November 1, 2025: All Saints' Day
- Thursday, December 25, 2025: Christmas Day (see Christmas Markets)
- Friday, December 26, 2026: Saint Stephen's Day.
By taking 3 days off on Monday December 22, Tuesday December 23 and Wednesday December 24, 2025, you can benefit from 9 consecutive days off if your collective bargaining agreement allows. A great way to round off 2025! - Thursday January 1, 2026: New Year.
Postponing Friday, January 2 will give you 4 days of long rest to get the New Year off to a good start. - April 5 and 6, 2026: Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Enjoy a long weekend to soak up the traditions of the Easter festivities.
- Friday May 1: Labor Day.
- Saturday May 9: Europe Day

And don't forget to book your Friday May 15 to take advantage of the 4-day long weekend in spring. - Monday May 25, 2026: Whit Monday. If you book on Tuesday May 26, you'll be able to attend the pilgrimage and the famous Echternach dancing procession.)

Vacations in Luxembourg
With traditions still very much alive in Luxembourg, certain local or customary holidays are still celebrated.
However, employers are under no obligation to grant these days off to their employees. Employers are free to decide whether or not employees are exempt from work on the days in question.

Vacations for the 2025-2026 school year
For Luxembourg schools and lycées, the 2025-2026 school year will run from Monday, September 15, 2025 to Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
- The All Saints' vacation will begin on Saturday November 1 and end on Sunday November 9, 2025.
- No classes on December 6, St. Nicholas Day, for children in the basic school system.
- Christmas vacations will begin on Saturday, December 20, 2025 and end on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
- Winter or Carnival vacations will begin on Saturday, February 14 and end on Sunday, February 22, 2026. Before that, the children will have the joy of making pretty lanterns for Liichtsmessdag.
- The spring or Easter vacations start on Saturday, March 28, 2026. They will last until Sunday April 12.
- The Whitsun vacation begins on Saturday May 23, 2026 and ends on Sunday May 31.
- The summer vacations will begin on Thursday, July 16, 2026. They will return to school on Monday, September 14, 2026.
School vacations 2026-2027 in Luxembourg
The new school year starts on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 and ends on Friday, July 16, 2027.
- The All Saints' vacation will run from Saturday, October 31, 2026 to Sunday, November 8, 2026.
- On December 6, 2026, Saint Nicolas will visit the children in the basic schools.
- Christmas vacations will run from Saturday, December 19, 2026 to Sunday, January 3, 2027.
- Carnival vacation from Saturday, February 6, 2027 to Sunday, February 14, 2027
